Transfer Station Permit Requirement

  • Residents
    • All users must obtain a free permit to use the Transfer Station. Permits are issued at the Scale House upon arrival.
    • To receive a permit, users must provide proof of residency or property ownership, such as:
      • Driver’s license
      • Vehicle registration
      • Utility bill or official mail addressed to your residence
    • Once issued, future visits will only require your permit number for entry.
  • Contractors
    • The Transfer Station is intended for residential use and small quantities of material. Contractors working for East Lyme residents are limited in the types and amounts of material they may bring.
    • To use the facility, contractors must present proof the material is from an East Lyme residence, such as:
      • Building permit
      • Signed note from the homeowner
      • Utility bill or official mail from the job site
    • A day pass will be issued at the Scale House based on these requirements.

Items that can be brought to the Transfer Station for free

  • Used Antifreeze
  • Used Motor Oil (See Motor Oil Recycling)
  • Used Cooking Oil
  • Paint (See Paint Recycling)
  • Residential leaves (See Commercial Contractor Leaf Fee on the Fall Leaf Collection page)
  • Wood Grinding Service
  • For residents only (not commercial contractors)
  • No rocks, dirt, metal or dimensional lumber
  • Mattresses
  • Not soiled
    • Limit 4 per week
    • Accepted only when container has space
  • Appliances
    • Fee for appliances containing Freon
  • Batteries
  • Electronics
  • Fluorescent Bulbs
  • LED Bulbs
  • Propane Tanks
  • Scrap Metal
  • Books
  • Clothes, Shoes & Accessories
    • All items must be dry, contain no odor or mold.
    • Items do not need to be in wearable condition
    • Acceptable Items List
  • Cardboard (Flattened)
