Information

  • The Department provides curbside leaf collection during designated dates in the fall.
  • Each fall, the Department waits until mid-October to determine the actual start date of our fall leaf collection depending on the timing of the leaves coming down for that year. At that time, we will post the starting date.
  • In 2023, we will be starting the collection on Monday, October 30 and will continue the collection through Friday December 1st or the first snowfall, whichever is sooner.
  • No collection will occur on the Thursday or Friday of Thanksgiving week.
  • Residents can always bring bags of leaves to the Transfer Station on Roxbury Road free of charge. The Transfer Station is open Tuesday – Saturday 7:30AM to 2:30PM with the exception of Holidays. Check the Town website for observed Holidays.
  • The curbside collection is only for properties on Town approved roads.
  • Leaves should be free of branches, yard waste, grass and anything else that is not leaves.
  • Curbside Collection General Information
    • Leaves must be in standard paper yard bags
    • You need to send an email message to PublicWorks@eltownhall.com requesting pickup
    • Include in the email your name, address & number of bags
    • We collect the bags on your regular trash collection day after receipt of your request.
    • Email requests must be sent to us 24 hours prior to your regular garbage day or if you have a Monday collection day it must be in by Friday at 10am to ensure that we get your location to the field crew picking up that day.

Information for Contractors

Contractors working for residents and looking to dispose of leaves at the East Lyme Transfer Station will be limited to free disposal rates for pickup size dump truck loads or smaller loose leaves and must provide proof of working in town.

Contractors utilizing Vacuum trailers, roll off containers or any other method creating large volumes of leaves will be required to pay Brush Rates to dispose of leaves due to the volume the town must handle and the cost to process and dispose of. This will be determined by the scale house operator or Transfer Station supervisor on site.

Additional Information

Why do you need to send an email to Public Works to request leaf pickup?
We don’t just drive all the roads in town each week as there are 118 miles of roads in town so that would be highly inefficient. If a resident doesn’t want to call or email the Department and if we see leaves in front of your house in the proper bags, we will try our best to pick them up, however, those that call or email us will be all but assured that we will pick up your leaves.

How does the Department communicate our message to the public?
The two main methods for the Public Works Department to disseminate information to the public are the town website (eltownhall.com) and on the Public Safety and Public Works Facebook pages.

If you ever have questions about our services, please email the department at PublicWorks@eltownhall.com.
