The Town has been notified by our salt supplier that the recent series of winter storms has significantly increased demand and placed heavy strain on their inventory. They are completely out of salt now and their next shipment is not expected until late next week. That mean that deliveries to customers are anticipated to resume no earlier than February 16th and could be longer until they start catching up with their orders..
What this means for East Lyme
We should still have enough treated salt on hand to safely treat the roads for the next few weather events; however, we want everyone to be aware that we will be applying less material than usual, especially on side roads. Our primary focus will be on keeping the main roads treated. The reduced application rate means that clearing efforts may take longer, and roads may not be down to bare pavement as quickly as in years past. We ask all drivers to slow down, use caution, and give yourselves extra time when traveling. We will also not be able to provide salt to residents who come to the Field Service Building for the foreseeable future.
We placed a large order in mid‑January and another at the end of January, so we are hoping to start getting more treated salt in the next few weeks that would start replenishing our supply.
We are also monitoring the forecast, which currently suggests the possibility of 2-4 inches of snow tonight (Friday 2/6) into early Saturday morning 2/7.
We want our residents and local businesses to know that we are taking every responsible step to keep roads safe, de‑iced, and passable during this period. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at PublicWorks@eltownhall.com.
