Paint Recycling

Latex paint can be brought to the Transfer Station, Cash True Value and Rings End Lumber in East Lyme.

The following architectural coatings in 5-gallon containers or less may be brought to the Transfer Station. Must be sealed, original container with original label.

  • Interior and exterior architectural
  • Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, paints: latex, acrylic, water-based, urethanes (single component)
    alkyd, oil-based, enamel (including textured coatings)
  • Deck coatings, floor paints (including elastomeric)
  • Primers, sealers, undercoaters
  • Stains
  • Waterproofing – concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellents (not tar or bitumen-
    based)
  • Metal coatings, rust preventatives
  • Field and lawn paints

Paint Can Size and Condition

  • Size: 5 gallons or less
  • Original container
  • Original label that can be read
  • Sealed
  • Not leaking
  • No empty cans
  • Cans dry with latex paint are accepted

The following cannot be collected at the Transfer Station and must be disposed of at a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection.

  • Paint thinners, mineral spirits, solvents
  • Aerosol coatings
  • Auto and marine paints
  • Art and craft paints
  • Caulking compounds, epoxies, glues, adhesives
  • Paint additives, colorants, tints, resins
  • Wood preservatives (containing pesticides)
  • Roof patch and repair
  • Asphalt, tar and bitumen-based products
  • 2-component coatings
  • Deck cleaners
  • Traffic and road marking paints
  • Industrial Maintenance (1M) coatings
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) (shop application) paints and finishes

Empty latex and oil-based cans can be disposed of in your brown trash can. Oil-based paints can be disposed of at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection.

Motor Oil Recycling

East Lyme Town Residents may drop off used Motor Oil (not mixed with other fluids) at the town Transfer Station during regular business hours. “Used Motor Oil” includes crank case oil and other types of oils, such as transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and hydraulic fluid. “Used Motor Oil” does NOT include other vehicle fluids, such as windshield washer fluid, brake fluid, or gasoline & diesel fuels. It also does NOT include used motor oil that is generated through the maintenance of commercial vehicles.
