Searching PDF Document Contents
Town of East Lyme meeting agendas, minutes and other documents are stored in PDF format. Many of the PDF documents are scanned images of printed pages. To provide for searching of PDF documents, an Optical Character Recognition algorithm analyzes the PDF documents creating a text search index. In addition, the algorithm adds an estimated publication date to the search index. Our PDF Document Search tool, provided by Google, uses any embedded text found in ELTOWNHALL.COM PDF documents and any text found using an Optical Character Recognition algorithm to create a search results list. The OCR algorithm may incorrectly interpret some of the scanned words.
Beginning January 29, 2019, most PDF documents are scanned at town hall using OCR technology. This enables use of Adobe Acrobat’s Find and Advanced Search features to search within a document while it is being viewed. When viewing a PDF, use CTRL F (Windows) or COMMAND F (Mac) to open a search text box.
The search results list may be sorted by the estimated publication Date or by Relevance. The Relevance ranking is based on how many of the search keywords are found in a PDF document.
Search results sometimes contain documents that have been removed from the website. This occurs because Google does not promptly remove “not found” items from the search index.
The Optical Character Recognition technology may not correctly interpret parts of some documents. See Disclaimer.
Document Search Tips
- Use a dash before a keyword to exclude documents containing that keyword from the results.
- Put a word or phrase in quotes to find documents containing the same words in the same order as the ones inside the quotes. Only use this if you’re looking for an exact word or phrase, otherwise you may exclude many results.
- Use an asterisk as a placeholder for any unknown or wildcard terms. Example:
lots * minimum
- Use AND and/or OR to improve search results. Example:
(sale OR sell) AND (gasoline OR fuel) AND tank
