What is the CPA?
It is a program that provides residents and business owners with an overview of the law enforcement functions of the East Lyme Police Department and the criminal justice system we operate in. Through classroom and hands-on instruction, the students will learn what it is like to be a police officer in East Lyme.
When is the CPA?
Class will begin on October 12, 2023, meeting every Thursday evening from 6:00PM – 8:00PM. (9 sessions, one day a week, excluding the week of Thanksgiving)
Where is the CPA held?
Classes will be held at the East Lyme Police Department, 277 West Main Street, Niantic.
What will I learn at the CPA?
Some sample topics are:
- Tour of the Police Station
- Hiring process and Field Training
- Patrol Operations
- DUI and Drug Recognition
- Traffic Enforcement
- Accident Investigation,
- Juvenile and Youth Laws
- TASER demo
- K9 demo
- amongst other topics.
Will there be a ride along?
Yes! Each student will be given the opportunity to ride with an officer on patrol.
Who teaches the class?
The majority of the instructors are East Lyme Police Officers. There may be a few guest speakers from other police departments.
Who can apply for the CPA?
The CPA is a free program open to the residents of the Town of East Lyme as well as East Lyme business owners. The CPA is open to adults 18 years of age or older. The class is limited to 20 students; preference will be given to East Lyme residents on a first come first serve basis.
How can I apply for the CPA?
All that is required is a completed application. Applications are available in the lobby of the Police Department or online at Citizens Police Academy Application.
How will I know if I am granted a seat?
You will be notified on or before 10/01/2023 to confirm that you have been approved to attend.
