With the approach of spring it is time to consider the hazards of flooding and what you can do to prepare for flood emergencies.

If it has been raining hard for several hours, or steadily raining for days, be alert to the possibility of flood. Listen to local radio or TV for flood information. A flood WATCH means a flood is possible. A flood WARNING means flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area. Flash floods can take only a few minutes to a few hours to develop.

Reduce potential flood damage in your home by raising your furnace, water heater and electric panel if they are in areas that may be flooded.

Prepare a family disaster plan and keep insurance policies and valuable documents in a safe deposit box. Check to see if you have insurance that covers flooding. Assemble a disaster supplies kit containing a first aid kit, medications, food, water, and a battery powered radio and flashlight.

Identify where you could go if told to evacuate. Choose a friend’s home in another town, motel or shelter. Keep your car’s gas tank filled.

The key to successfully getting through an emergency is preparation.
