Beginner Cowl Knitting Class (Virtual)

Our instructors will show you the basic techniques and get you started on an easy to conquer first cowl. Yarn can be solid or patterned.  You can get a self-striping yarn that makes you look brilliant in your knitting techniques with very little effort on your part.  You have the choice of 2 patterns: The Cubitz cowl (top photo) or the Ikigai cowl (roughly translated, ikigai is “the happiness of always being busy.”  (bottom photo), both with some modifications and clarifications. You can make the cowl as long as you will like. We will provide the pattern.

Prerequisites: You should know how to knit and purl.  We will be using circular needles.  We will show you have to join your cast on in the round (without twisting!!) and work the pattern.

Meeting Dates: Tuesday Evenings February 23rd through March 9th (3 classes)
Time: 6:30-7:30 PM
Virtual Format: Zoom (Classes will be recorded and participants will have the ability to watch again)
Fee: $30 per person (does not include materials, materials available at Twist Yarn Shoppe, participants receive 20% discount)
Materials to buy:
-Worsted weight yarn like Malabrigo Rios, Berroco Ultra wool or other worsted weight color changing yarn – Available at TWIST)
-Needles in sizes US 7 or 8 – 16” long
-Stitch markers (really helps keep your pattern or stitch number on track)

  • Come get your yarn at Twist and have it balled up (if your yarn is in a twisty skein). You also might want to cast on while at the shop so we can help you join your knitting in the round without twisting it. (so, plan on a little time to get this done.)

– For those overachievers that want to start NOW, you can cast on 120 stitches for the Cubitz cowl (or more if you want it to be a looser cowl – but in multiples of 3) or 132 stitches for the Ikigai cowl. Make sure you place a marker between your first and last stitch when you join in the round. You can also cast on during class if you would like some guidance or have limited time!
