Every year, to extend the life of our roads, selected roads will receive a pavement preservation. Pavement preservation is a management technique where roads are treated with a preventative measure before the end of their life-cycle (before the pavement begins to really break apart). This form of pavement management greatly extends the life of our roads and delays more costly reconstruction efforts which would otherwise typically need to occur every 20-years or so. While there are many forms of pavement treatment a common form we use throughout East Lyme is rubberized chip seal. This technique is cost effective and holds up well against snow plowing and freeze/thaw cycles. It involves laying and rolling stone over emulsion, that acts like a glue for the stone on top of the exiting pavement. While the majority of the excess stone will be swept the same day; it is to be expected and normal that small amounts of stone will remain in the roadway for a few weeks and can accumulate in the curb line. We will come back in the following weeks to sweep again.
