See the Fire Marshal’s Open Burning Permits and Guidelines for Bon Fires and Recreational Burning information.
If you’re planning on having a recreational fire or a bonfire/campfire at your residence the East Lyme Fire Marshal’s Office requests you contact the East Lyme Dispatch Center at 860-739-3419 and notify the dispatchers.
A recreational fire is an outdoor fire, burning materials where the fuel being burned is not contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, portable outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbeque pit and has a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height for pleasure, cooking warmth or similar purposes.
Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material. Only seasoned dry firewood can be burned. Burning of yard waste, leaves, refuse, trash, building materials or other materials is expressly prohibited. A garden hose, fire extinguisher or other means of extinguishment must be readily available for immediate use. It is requested that the resident contact the East Lyme Dispatch Center upon completion of the fire.
