Mandatory Water Conservation In Effect

E-mail Print

Water restrictions imposed for East Lyme and Niantic will be in effect from 9:00 a.m. on Friday through noon on Monday of each week until further notice.
The following restrictions will apply to all customers of the East Lyme Water System:

1)         Prohibiting the sprinkling, watering or irrigation of lawns.
2)         Prohibiting washing of motor vehicles and the outdoor surfaces of all buildings and structures, sidewalks and driveways.
3)         Prohibiting the filling or cleaning of swimming and wading pools.
4)         Prohibiting the service of water to customers of public restaurants except at the specific request of customers.

Persons found violating any provision of the restrictions imposed by the Board of Selectmen shall be fined not more than ninety-nine dollars ($99.00). In the case of a continuing violation, each day's continuance thereof shall be deemed to be a separate and distinct offense. These restrictions are effective Friday, July 3, 2009 and will remain in effect until further notice.

In addition, the restrictions –  will be in effect ONLY on weekends and do NOT include gardens, both vegetable and floral or ornamental.

Our daily summer shortfall has averaged 400,000 gallons per day. Since last summer we have added a new supply of 200,000 gallons per day by replacing two (2) wells with more efficient pumps, etc. We are also expecting to tap the wells at Darrow Pond (currently unused) for an additional – weekend only – 150,000 gallons per day.

You may ask why the restrictions? We all must learn to be better at managing our natural resources. It is my hope that by learning to live a little more frugally with water use on summer weekends, we will translate those habits into our daily activities year round.

As always, contact me with your questions or concerns by email or call – 691-4110.

Thank you,
Paul M. Formica, First Selectman
