Road Resurfacing Program

The East Lyme Public Works Department will be resurfacing the roads listed below.

Weather permitting, the first part of the Cape Seal process is scheduled to take place the week of July 10th thru the 14th. Please do not park on these streets during these days.

The resurfacing project, which is called Cape Seal, will be applied to these roads in several steps and is designed to improve the condition of the roads, extend the life of the pavement and reduce further deterioration.

During the first part of the process the road surface will be sealed with a layer of asphalt “chips,” which is a mixture of liquid asphalt and stone. The asphalt chips will remain on the street surface for approximately one to two weeks to allow the asphalt “chip-seal” layer to cure. While the asphalt chip layer is on the road the travel surface will be rougher than usual. Pedestrians and bicyclists should use caution on the road during this phase of the project. This is a temporary condition.

Approximately one to two weeks after the chip-sealing process is finished, workers will return to sweep up any remaining loose asphalt chips from the streets and a final travel surface will be applied. This is a thin layer of asphalt to seal and protect the stone chips which insures a longer road life and provides a smoother travel surface. The finished product will initially have a slightly texturized surface which will be smoothed out over time by vehicle traffic.

Weather permitting, the first part of the Cape Seal process is scheduled to take place the week of July 10th thru the 14th. Please do not park on these streets during these days. The final travel surface will be applied approximately two weeks after the chip-sealing process is finished; making for a smoother travel surface. Traffic control will be maintained at all times during the application and delays should be minimal.
