SENIOR DOUBLES TENNIS

The Senior Doubles Tennis League has ended for the summer season.  Look for the program to resume next June. 

WALKING WILL CONTINUE

The Walking Program will continue through September and will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00am to 10:00am. On Tuesday mornings, the group meets at Cini Park and walks the Boardwalk.  On Thursday mornings, the group meets at Rocky Neck State Park and walks within the Park.  After Labor Day, you will not need a pass in order to access Rocky Neck State Park.

One-on-One Internet Classes

The rate charged for the One-on-One Internet/Computer classes will increase to $12.00 per person for residents and $14.00 per person for non-residents beginning in September.  This rate covers the one hour instruction provided by the teacher.  Please make a note of it.

BINGO

BINGO will be played on every Friday for the month of September. 

SENIOR GOLF LEAGUE

The Senior Center’s Golf League will continue to meet on Monday mornings beginning at 9:30am at our own local golf course, Cedar Ridge.  As before, this league is for beginners, those people who have not played golf in years, and those people who enjoy a social game.  This is an informal league and the only requirement is if you would like to play on any given Monday, please call the C.O.A. office the preceding Friday by 12:00pm.  The office will then call Cedar Ridge on Friday afternoon to give them notice as to

 how many people to expect. 

SENIOR FITNESS SCHEDULE CHANGE

Beginning the first week of September, the afternoon Senior Fitness classes will move from Monday & Wednesday at 2:15pm to 3:15pm to Tuesday & Thursday afternoons beginning at 3:45pm and running until 4:45pm.  The Monday, Wednesday, Friday morning classes will remain the same at 10:15am.  Please make a note of it.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

The Senior Center hosts a Book Discussion Group that meets the second Wednesday of every month between 2:00pm and 3:00pm.  In September, the group will meet on the 10th and will read “The Corrections” written by Jonathan Franzen.  Call the C.O.A. office for more details.

DANCE AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER

The Senior Center will be hosting a Dance on Friday, September 12th from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.  The dance will be held in the Community Center.  There will be an admission fee of $9.00 per person and the tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 6:30pm.  The group that will be playing is The Illusions, a band from the Norwich area that is quite well known.  They play popular dance songs from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.  There will be light refreshments available.  If you are 50 or above and like to dance or enjoy listening to music, you will want to come.  This dance is open to the public.  Refreshments are included in the admission price

NEW MOVIE MONDAY

The Senior Center will show a Movie on Monday, September 15th at 1:00pm The choice this month will be “Juno”.  This coming of age comedy stars Ellen Page, Michale Cera, Jason Batemen and many others.  Come see what happens when a teenage girl is faced with an unexpected pregnancy enlists her best friend to help find her unborn child a suitable home.  The Center will accept donations.

MATURE DRIVER CLASS

  DAY TIME CLASS & EVENING CLASS

The Senior Center, in conjunction with AARP, will sponsor two (2) Mature Driver Safety classes for the month of September – a daytime class and an evening class.  The daytime class will be held on Tuesday, September 16th and Wednesday, September 17th from 9:15am to 1:15pm. This class will be held at the East Lyme Public Library.  The evening class will be held on Monday, September 22nd and Tuesday, September 23rd from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.  This class will be held at the Senior Center.  The class fee for either session is $10.00 per person and payment by check is preferred.  The entire 8 hours of classroom time must be attended in order to receive your certificate of attendance.  Registration begins September 2nd.  You must come in and pay in order to register. 

SAFE INVESTING SEMINAR

The Connecticut Department of Banking and AARP Connecticut will be presenting a seminar about Safe Investing on Tuesday, September 16th at 1:00pm.  Come and learn how to protect yourself from fraud and how to make wise and safe investment choices.  You will also learn how con artists gain your trust, offer deals that are too good to be true and how you can avoid their traps.  Call the C.O.A. office to register beginning September 2nd.

INTERMEDIATE QUILTING

The Senior Center has a group of Intermediate to Advanced Quilters that sew at the Center every month.  They now meet on the THIRD Friday of the month.  The session will start at 5:00pm and end sometime after 9:00pm.  You must bring your own personal sewing supplies and your sewing machine.  Please bring $2.00pp each session for coffee supplies and if you plan on arriving at 5:00pm, bring a dish to share for supper.  Residency not an issue – all are welcome.  If you have any questions, please call the C.O.A. office.

LOSS OVER 60 SUPPORT GROUP

The Senior Center in collaboration with Hospice Southeastern Connecticut will be hosting a support group for anyone over 60 who has suffered the loss of a loved one.  This support group is not limited to Hospice participants – it is for anyone who is 60 and over and has experienced the death of a spouse, child, relative or friend.  The group will meet beginning on Thursday, September 25th from 10:30am to 12:00pm and will continue for 6 weeks.  Call the C.O.A. office to register beginning September 2nd.

HEARING CLINIC TO BE OFFERED AT THE CENTER

Mr. Bob Sawyer, a Connecticut Hearing Instrument Specialist & dispenser for nearly 20 years, will be hosting a Hearing Clinic at the Senior Center on Wednesday, September 24th from 9:00am to 12:00pm.  He will perform a hearing screening (a short audiometric evaluation that will show possible hearing loss and ay reveal some medical conditions) – provide hearing aid maintenance service (inspect and clean individual hearing instruments to improve and prolong performance) – and inspect for ear wax accumulation and foreign objects in the ear canal.  Call the C.O.A. office for an appointment beginning September 2nd

COME TO DINNER AND SUPPORT MEALS ON WHEELS

The East Lyme Senior Center and TVCCA/Senior Nutrition Program are holding a Dinner on Thursday, September 25th at 5:00pm in support of Meals on Wheels and the Senior Nutrition Program.  The Meals on Wheels program and the Congregate Lunch Program that meets at the Senior Center are vital programs that enable people to remain in their homes.  It is important for the community to support these programs – for their neighbors and maybe even for themselves in the future.  We will host a traditional fall dinner of Meat Loaf, Mashed Potatoes and Peas with Apple Crisp for dessert. There will be a suggested donation of $2.50 and anything given in excess of that amount will go to the Senior Nutrition Program.  Please call to register beginning September 2nd.  Transportation will be provided.
